In today's episode of Psych Talk I discuss pediatric chronic illness and its relationship to mental health. I start the episode by defining chronic illness, both generally and in children, discuss some common pediatric chronic illnesses, and the prevalence rates. Additionally, I talk about causes of pediatric chronic illness. I then discuss the relation between pediatric chronic illness and mental health, why concerns are co-morbid, and the bidirectionally of the relationship. I cover how mental health professionals can help in the management and treatment of chronic illness and co-morbid mental health concerns, as well as some evidence-based interventions used for this population. I discuss coping with chronic illness and end the episode by briefly touching on the impact childhood chronic illness has on parents and siblings.
