In today’s episode of Psych Talk I speak with Danielle Ganchrow, an undergraduate student at Binghamton University about college student mental health. Danielle shares her own journey with mental health concerns, specifically the internalized stigma she held for so long about mental health concerns and therapy. Danielle and I speak about the stigma of reaching out and getting help for mental health concerns, both in general and specifically in the college student population. She shares how mental health stigma impacts both social and academic aspects of college students’ functioning. I speak about college student mental health from a research and clinical perspective and Danielle shares her personal experiences and things she has observed related to how college impacts students’ mental health. We also discuss the impact of COVID-19 on college student mental health and the challenges college students face with switching to online classes. Danielle shares ways that she believes mental health stigma can be reduced on college campuses, as well as provides some insights and words of encouragement for any college students listening who may be struggling with their mental health.
