None of us likes being corrected, being told that we're doing something wrong. Yet sometimes that is exactly what we most need. The prophets had the unenviable job of telling stubborn people that they were going down the wrong path. Not surprisingly, those people didn't want to hear it. It's not surprising, then, that most prophets were persecuted or even killed for simply doing their job of speaking God's words.
Jeremiah stands out as the most passionate and anguished Old Testament prophet. It's no wonder he is referred to as "the weeping prophet" and that the other book attributed to him is called Lamentations. Clearly, he did not revel in having a front-row seat to the death of his own country. Would any of us?
Consider today who the prophetic voices are in your own life, both individually and corporately. Sometimes we all need a swift kick in the rear to get us back on the right path.
