Some of my favorite stories are the Lord of the Rings trilogy, C.S. Lewis's Narnia series, and the Harry Potter books. I know many of you love these stories also. I believe one of the appeals of these stories is the characters' use of magic -- they say things, and then those things happen. I believe these stories are an echo of the deepest, truest Magic in the universe, the Magic we see in Genesis 1 where the Creator speaks the entire cosmos into existence through the power of mere words.
I think one of the implications of this iconic chapter that we often overlook is that we who are made in God's image (Gen. 1:27) also wield tremendous power through the use of our words. We speak words of anger or encouragement over someone else, and create a world of either hurt or blessing. Or in our internal self-talk, we speak either words of despair or hope to ourselves and set the entire tone for the rest of our day.
Truly, our words create our worlds.
