Nothing in our industry makes sense except through the eyes of Charles Darwin.
In the first podcast in the series, Professor Brian D Smith introduces the idea of transplanting Charles Darwin’s ideas from biology to business. Much more than a simple analogy, “Generalised Darwinism” is a way of understanding at any complex, adaptive system – whether that is a Brazilian rain forest or the biomedical industry sector.
“I’ve spent over 40 years working in medtech, pharma and diagnostic companies and, honestly, I think it’s the most interesting and important industry in the world…But here’s the thing: this industry - my industry - doesn’t make sense. Nothing in our industry makes sense, except in the light of evolution.”
Show Notes
My research into the evolution of the biomedical industry, including pharma and medtech, is most comprehensively described in my 5th book:
“Darwin’s Medicine. How life science business models are evolving”
And if you would like a summary of the book, I published a series of 4 articles in the PME. You can request the PDF set by mailing me at the address below.
You can also find a full archive of over 300 of my publications in the free library at my website, Pragmedic.com
And you can also find the published editions of all my “Darwin’s Medicine” columns in PME magazine at PMlive.com
Finally, I’m always very happy to talk to other people who are as interested as I am in the pharma, medtech and other biomedical businesses. Please email me at brian.smith@pragmedic.com
