After returning from Mitzrayim (Egypt) the first time, the sons of Yaakov tell him everything that has happened to them and that if they come down to Mitzrayim again without the little brother, they will be killed. Yaakov of course get upset, but then Reuven steps up and tells Yaakov that he'll be in charge, and if he doesn't bring Binyamin back, Yaakov can kill 2 of Reuven's sons (!).
Yaakov doesn't really answer Reuven, and the Torah continues to tell us that there's a really strong famine in the Land of Yisrael, and they have to go to get more food.
Only then does Yehuda step up and makes a guarantee to Yaakov that he will return Binyamin.
This offer by Yehuda seems to do the job and Yaakov is finally convinced to let Binyamin go.
What are these offers by Reuven and then by Yehuda??
Why doesn't Yehuda step up right away when Reuven does??
And how come Yehuda's offer calms Yaakov down?!
