Born and raised in southwestern Indiana, Bart was a farm boy until he graduated high school and went into military service as a member of the Air Force. His 4-year service offered him to grow in his faith as he and Vivian found a strong faith community near the Air Force base where Bart was stationed. After having his eyes opened to the possibility of pursuing college education as a non-traditional student, Bart and the family moved to Johnson University in 1985.
Bart's career after Johnson included a few years on the mission field, several years in public education, and a 21-year ministry with Owensville First Christian Church in his hometown of Owensville, Indiana.
