Welcome back to the 129th episode of The Cup which is our a weekly (give or take, TBD, these are unprecedented times) performing arts talk show presented by Cup of Hemlock Theatre. With the theatres on a come back we offer a mix of both reviews of live shows we've seen and continued reviews of prophet productions! For our 129th episode we bring you the promised second episode of our latest branch of The Cup called “The Cup: Editorial.” This time we explore the concept of “Theatre Etiquette,” and the influx of heated discourse that has lately been surrounding its supposed decline. Join Jillian Robinson, Mackenzie Horner, and Ryan Borochovitz, as they discuss the place of etiquette in our evolving theatre landscape, the basics of social contract ethics, and the required responsibilities of venues and patrons alike.
CONTENT WARNING: Please be advised that this conversation contains references (with varying degrees of directness) to classism, ableism, racism, homophobia, and transphobia.
A NOTE ON TOPICALITY: This episode was recorded prior to the incident that occurred during a performance of The Bodyguard musical on April 7, 2023. If you were wondering why we neglected to comment on that recent reinvigoration of this already evergreen topic, that is why. We trust you to infer – based on each of our general stances on the subject of etiquette – where we stand on that specific event and what we might have said about it had this been recorded in its aftermath.
