She's unnamed, unnoticed, and overlooked. Yet Jesus, as he is teaching in a synagogue on the Sabbath day sees her. He sees her spirit, bent over, unable to stand erect with dignity. And he calls to her, "Woman, you are set free." It is a word of liberation, of release, spoken on the Sabbath. And with those words, Jesus sets off a controversy.
Pastor Nancy encourages us to reflect upon Jesus's liberating actions, inviting us to consider, "who in our society is bent over by a crippling spirit in our communities today? Who is rendered invisible, unseen?"
Scriptures: Luke 13:10-17 & Isaiah 58:9-14
