In 1993, a Chicago alt band was on such a verge of breaking up that the lead singer Billy Corgan pulled a McCartney and performed almost all instruments himself. What resulted is an album so successful that it kept the band together, and with a sound so big it influenced all the shoegaze, grunge, and post-grunge acts to come after.
