Hello, my dance friends! Today, I get to chat with the absolutely brilliant Serena Spears, a multi-faceted dancer influenced by MENAHT (Middle Eastern, North African, Hellenic, Turkish)/SWANATH (Southwest Asia, North African, Turkish, Hellenic) dance, Latin, Contemporary, Ballet, and African Folkloric dance forms.
A Fusion dancer throughout, Serena enjoys learning a variety of dance forms and educating herself on the cultures behind these dances to further expand her own creative and movement boundaries, and has performed throughout the country on various stages and for various platforms and audiences as she has expanded her knowledge over the years.
She was a founding organizer for last year's first ever EMERGE Fusion Dance Festival, an online event offering workshops and performances from a small group of fusion dancers and dancers of origin. This event was created with the intention of highlighting the importance of thoughtful innovation in fusion dance coming from a connection to the roots and cultures of the styles fusion dancers utilize and are inspired by in our community.
She tells us how this festival got started and why the online platform was so necessary for the event's structure and initial launch.
Serena will also be teaching and performing at the 3rd annual Queer Afro Latin Dance Festival, which will be taking place online this time around, and describes her teaching goals and her focus on movement in this workshop.
