NOTES:

1This is the unveiling of Jesus Christ… Apokalypsis combines apo (to lift) with kaluptó (veil, hide, cover), and so could be translated “the lifting of the veil” or “the unveiling.” The book is called the unveiling or “apokalpsis” of Jesus Christ. Just like you would expect chicken and noodles in chicken noodle soup. In Greek, the word for “revelation” is ἀποκάλυψις (apokalupsis). The scary English word “apocalypse” comes from this Greek word. This word has nothing to do with ominous catastrophes or disasters of any sort. It carries no connotations of doom or the end of the world. The book of Revelation is a first-century Jewish document that recognizes Jesus as Emperor of the worldwide empire. Jesus is the King of kings, so we must be kings.

1. Applauds Intolerance

1 Corinthians 5:

Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 1 Timothy 5:22 (ESV)

God judges those outside. "Purge the evil person from among you."

1 Corinthians 5:12-13 (ESV)

14Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.

Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 20As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear. 1 Timothy 5:19-20 (ESV)

2. Applauds Radicals

Radical has been defined as “of or relating to the root of something.” We must be radical in a way that returns to the roots of our faith because the root provides the nourishment needed for life!

“Nicolaitans”

The Greek meaning of “Nicolaitans” is “to rule [conquer] over people.”

Many see in this term the beginning of the movement a special class of clergy who ruled over the church—the beginnings of a hierarchical structure (clergy and laity) within the church.

2. Smyrna

Like myrrh, the Smyrna church, known as the suffering church, was crushed by Roman persecution but gave off the most fragrant perfume.

3. Applauds Persecution

4. Applauds Purity

3. Pergamos

The word Pergamos comes from a combination of two Greek words that mean "mixed, objectionable" and "marriage." Pergamos therefore means a "mixed marriage" that is "objectionable" to God.

Grace, peace, and mercy have a counterfeit in the kingdom of darkness.

Call the dry ground land, waters sea, separated light and darkness, day from the night….

Thrones are on wheels and movable. Rivers flow out of thrones.

αντι (anti), opposite, and the noun πας (pas), everything.

Antipas means against everything!

4. Thyratira

The meaning of Thyratira is “daughter.” When a foreign king conquered this city, he renamed it Thyratira to celebrate the birth of his daughter.

The Jezebel spirit is counterfeit compassion that embraces lawlessness and empowers those who have a victim mentality.
