Today’s episode is for Saturday, October 24, 2020. Our Word of the Day is ‘sugarcoat.’ We sugarcoat things to make them seem more positive, pleasant and palatable or to fool people into doing something they'd rather not. Here are some other terms that may have been new for you today:
Lesson: Cancel Culture: Cancel Culture has become a fearful phenomenon in the English-speaking world. If you do or say something others don’t like, you may be cancelled. You’ll be harassed on social media until you close your accounts. You may lose your job and be removed from all public appearances you may have had planned. Basically, for saying something, others don’t like you are removed from the culture and society. This phenomenon also happens in Japan. Here it’s 干される (hosareru) to be deprived of one’s role; to have one’s livelihood taken away. I am still shocked that Kazuhiro Kiyohara has basically been removed from Japan Professional Baseball history for his drug conviction.
Hard pill to swallow: A hard pill to swallow is any fact or piece of news that's hard to accept but inevitable and impossible to change. http://bit.ly/aeHardPillToSwallow
