Pastor Taylor Shippy - Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18
Jesus told His disciples: “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden... So let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father” (Matt 5:14, 16). However if you keep listening to Jesus’ mountain side sermon… Jesus will eventually also say: ‘Be careful! Watch out! Take heed! Don’t showcase your good deeds in front of others to be seen by others. If you do, you will lose, forfeit, your wages from your Father who art heaven’ (Matt 6:1). How do we let our good deeds shine “like stars in the sky” (Phil 2:15) while also at the same time avoiding others seeing us?
