Pastor Taylor Shippy - 1 John 1:5-2:2
Martin Luther once spoke of Christians as being "simul justus et peccator," Latin for “at once justified and a sinner” or “simultaneously saint and sinner.” This is not a description of who we are before God; rather, Luther believed it was a description of the ‘both/and’ reality that characterizes the nominal Christian experience day-in and day-out. He believed that saints are 'forgiven sinners;' however, on this side of heaven, inside each of us, throughout our lives, is a sort-of tug-of-war between our old sin nature that is being steadily extinguished and our new self that is budding... This morning, we look what it means to be saints while simultaneously sinners. How do we respond to sins in our lives? I believe John invites us to confess.
