For the past few weeks, we’ve been talking specifically about the later half of the Ten Commandments. These terse, pithy, often only two or three word sayings in the original Hebrew. Sayings aimed toward honoring and loving our neighbor. So far, we’ve looked at honoring the sanctity of our neighbor’s life, and honoring our neighbor’s dignity, and honoring not only our neighbor’s property but their right to own and possess things.
Today we will be talking about honoring our neighbor's reputation. As author Jen Wilkes summarizes, we are not to take our neighbor’s life, spouse, or stuff. And the ninth commandment will charge us not to take his or her good name.
