Pastor Taylor Shippy - John 19:26-27

All the Gospels tell us that various women—faithful followers of Jesus throughout His earthly ministry—make the journey from Galilee to Calvary (cf. Matt 27:55-56; Mk 15:40-41; Lk 23:27, 49). However, John is unique in mentioning that among these women, standing near the cross, was Jesus’ mother.

This is not a throwaway detail for John.

Jesus’ mother has only appeared twice in his Gospel—once at the very beginning (Jn 2:1) and now here at the very end (Jn 19:25). And that's not a coincidence for John.

Something deeper is going on here.

This morning we meditate on this week's Word from the Cross, exploring the conversation Jesus had with His mother and the Disciple Whom He Loved at the foot of the Cross.
