The 21st-Century Church: A Career, Not a Calling? In the 21st century, the church has increasingly begun to function like a business, employing pastors and staff under contracts to meet its objectives. Pastors, once seen as spiritual leaders with a divine calling, now often operate under financial pressure, treating ministry as a job due to the rising cost of living. Many are expected to fulfill a variety of roles beyond spiritual leadership, which stifles their creativity and forces them to conform to visions set by lay leaders or trends. This shift is not in line with biblical principles, which call for a church where every believer is empowered to serve. There is a need to return to a model that supports pastors in their unique callings and encourages all members to participate in ministry.
