Following the murder of a New Orleans police chiefby an unknown assailant, 11 Italian immigrants and Italian Americans were lynched by an angry mob on March 14, 1891.
The event remains the largest mass lynching in US history. In 2019, the city issued an official proclamation of apology for the tragic event, which had plagued the Italian community worldwide.
