Bret Boone was born into baseball.
A third generation Major Leaguer, Boone followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Ray Boone who was an infielder for the Indians, Tigers, White Sox, A’s, Braves and Red Sox and his father Bob Boone who was a backstop for the Phillies, Angels and Royals. Bret Boone was eventually joined by his younger brother Aaron who had a solid career as a third baseman for the Reds, Yankees, Indians, Marlins and Astros.
Bret’s formative years were spent in and around Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium during his father’s tenure as the Phillies’ starting catcher.
The do it all second baseman is a graduate of El Dorado High School in Placentia, California who played college ball at USC.
Boone was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fifth round of the 1990 MLB June Amateur Draft and within two seasons made this way to the M’s roster.
He spent 14 years in the majors before retiring prior to the 2006 season, collecting over 250 home runs and north of 1,000 RBIs. He was a three-time All-Star, four time Gold Glove winner and two time Silver Slugger Award winner.
A father of four, Boone currently hosts The Boone Podcast, which showcases interviews with some of the biggest names in the sports world and pulls back the curtain on Major League Baseball, offering listeners a behind the scenes take on the game.
We caught up to him to chat about seeing his rookie cards for the first time, his decked out sports bar and much more.
