Description

In this episode, I hang out with Happy Haugen. Happy is a singer, guitarist, bassist, community collaborator, and master logger of state license plates. He plays in several different bands including Ohphelia, Snooper, and Impediment. From playing high energy spycore feel in Snooper to the elaborate, sophisticated, and smooth Ohphelia. Happy lives at both edges of the spectrum. Listen as we talk about our love for Trader Joe’s and appreciation for a child’s curiosity and sense of wonder. Happy’s favorite band is the Replacements. Books he recommends are the Replacements biography and Alex Chilton (Big Star) biography. Happy describes the first time he saw Santana perform “Soul Sacrifice” at Woodstock and how that was a pivotal moment in his switch from sports to music. He shares insights on how he plays in 3 bands, the importance of being compensated for your art, and building a strong support system in your friends. Also learn about his community collaboration project called Bummer World. Influences like the Replacements, Big Star, Big Thief, Silicon Prairie, Glove, Amyl & the Sniffers, and Jonathan Richman. Enjoy!
