In this episode, I hang out with Michael Santoro. Michael is a fine art photographer, print specialist, cinematographer, and celestial set designer. His photos resemble something like a dream, vacant, void, and everyday. His photos are about removing the distracting minutiae to get a timeless masterpiece. A minimalist approach to create the “back rooms” of life. Video game lingo for spaces out of bounds from the base game. Being fascinated by the unknown and what shouldn’t be drives Michael’s work. He shares his experiences growing up in a monoculture, thinking he should pursue engineering, until he realized his passion for film and photography. Listen to learn his photography techniques behind the fantastic shoot from In The Firmament. A collection of photographs depicting a mysterious room with intimately engaged fragile figures adorned in translucent fabric with a Tungsten orb in the corner. Analytical and precise in process, but fanciful in subject matter. We share our love for Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith and how much that influenced us. Michael rides his bike to change scenery for the constant stimulation and inspiration. Places he likes to ride are Shelby Bottoms Nature Center and the farmland 20 minutes outside of the city. Finally, he recommends newcomers to establish your community and learn the lay of your area.
🎞️ Movie influences like Alien and Bladerunner. 📷 Photography influences like Gregory Crewdson. 🎥 Cinematography influences like Roger Deakins. 🎮 Video game influences like Counter Strike, Half-Life, and Team Fortress 2. Enjoy!
