Description

In this episode, I hang out with Stephen Roberts. Stephen is an indie folk rock songwriter, singer, and guitarist with a love for aggressive in-line skating.

Stephen shares his early attachment to The Beach Boys’ “Surfer Girl” and how a guitar solo from an Alter Bridge song moved him in 4th grade. He started learning Blink 182 and Alkaline Trio songs on the guitar. Stephen reveals unique music methods, like stabbing a mug filled with change as a percussion instrument.

Learn how Stephen and Christian Barraks (featured in episode #5) formed their band, Mama Would Be Proud. Stephen approaches songwriting as if it were his last creation. He overcame reservations about electronic elements in music. His advice to artists: it’s going to be hard, but you don’t need permission to create the art you want.

Support Stephen by following Mama Would Be Proud on social media, streaming their music, and purchasing their discography on Band Camp. He finds inspiration by learning cover songs and loves performing at Drk Mttr Collective. 🎵 His music influences include Bright Eyes, Animal Collective, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Blink 182, Oasis, Nimrod, Steel Train, and Sparklehorse. Enjoy!
