Description

Plato's Phaedo—the profound dialogue depicting Socrates' final hours and his discussion of the soul's immortality before his execution by hemlock. Translated by Benjamin Jowett, narrated by Bob Neufeld with full subtitles and background music.

📖 About the Work

Phaedo is one of Plato's great middle-period dialogues, along with The Republic and Symposium. Set on Socrates' last day before execution, the dialogue explores arguments for the soul's immortality and the nature of the afterlife. Socrates, imprisoned and sentenced to death by an Athenian jury for impiety and corrupting the youth, engages in dialectic with friends including the Thebans Cebes and Simmias. The dialogue is narrated by Phaedo of Elis, who was present at Socrates' death and recounts the day's philosophical discussions to fellow philosopher Echecrates. Phaedo is the seventh and final dialogue detailing Socrates' last days, following Theaetetus, Euthyphro, Sophist, Statesman, Apology, and Crito.

✍️ About Plato

Plato (c. 428–347 BCE) was a Greek philosopher and student of Socrates whose dialogues laid the foundations of Western philosophy. His works explore ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and the immortality of the soul. Phaedo represents both a moving tribute to his teacher Socrates and a profound philosophical investigation into death and the afterlife.
