Mark 1.21-28

A few weeks ago, we read the story of Jesus’ baptism, where God declares Jesus to be God’s son. From today’s reading, we get the sense that there is a lot more to discover about Jesus. The first miracle recorded in the Gospel of Mark is not a run-of-the-mill miracle like turning water into wine or multiplying food - in dramatic fashion, Jesus casts a demon out of a person he encounters in the synagogue. You would think that if Jesus wanted to keep his identity quiet, he wouldn’t go around demonstrating his authority in such a public manner. Yet, he lets his actions speak for themselves. And this creates a mystery that draws people to him. How do our actions reveal who Christ is in the world, not by shouting about who Jesus is, but instead by acting in a way that creates space, compels, and opens others to believe the impossible?
