*About our Worship*
So much of Christianity is focused on the afterlife, on saving our souls so that we are guaranteed
a spot in heaven. James challenges that notion outright, saying that if we don’t focus on helping
meet people’s bodily needs, “what is the good of that?” James is not trying to debate whether or
not we can earn our salvation, as far as he is concerned we are saved by the grace of God. For
him, God’s grace ought to prompt us towards good works, not as a ticket to heaven, but as a
grateful response to God, and as a way of demonstrating God’s power to those in need.
