Description

Under quarantine I got to create a short film, DEINCEPS MOTUS, with dancemakers and choreographers Angela DiFiore, Corinne Justine and Mark Santillano. In this episode, we reunite to talk about the Erie Dance Film Festival, the themes of our film and the process of working together for the first time, during a pandemic. Watch the Festival Cut of Deinceps Motus:

DEINCEPS MOTUS (2021) - 8 minutes

Filmmaker: John C. Lyons

Dancemakers: Angela DiFiore, Corinne Justine

Artistic Statement:

Our film title, Deinceps Motus, means “forward motion” when translated from Latin to English. This film includes themes of corporate greed, toxic masculinity, the patriarchy, and most importantly what the world could look like if we as a society do not respond to the climate crisis we are in. Our main character finds herself traveling from outdoor locations to seeking shelter in an indoor, dystopian environment, where she is joined by others who are inspired to unite in her journey. The group dance movement at the end of the film represents power in numbers and hope for the future. We are very proud of this film and enjoyed the collaboration immensely. Creating this film during the Covid 19 pandemic provided lots of challenges and opportunities that ultimately shaped all of the artistic choices that were made. Our team agrees that this opportunity to create a dance film during this time has been one of the silver linings of a particularly challenging time.
