The Black Culture Podcast sits down with author, attorney, transformational speaker, and mental health advocate Corey Minor Smith.  We cover everything from growing up black, her transformation as a mother, being a daughter of someone suffering from a severe mental health disorder, and her new book #Driven.   

Attorney Corey Minor Smith is a thought leader in the social justice space with a primary focus on mental health and wellness advocacy in communities across the nation. Smith serves as a keynote speaker at numerous national and international gatherings.  

After navigating through the mental health industry for over 20 years, Smith is a highly sought-after speaker and has been featured on Roland Martin Unfiltered, TV talk shows such as Sister Circle Live, radio programs like The Breakfast Club , Sirius XM programs like The Karen Hunter Show and the Audible original We’ve Got Answers as an advocate for funding, research, services and treatment for those living with severe mental illness. Smith has also written articles for blogs and on-line magazines in addition to using her compelling debut book, #Driven , lauded as “searing and moving” in the New York Times, as a resource for family and friends that have loved ones living with severe mental illness.  

Smith earned a bachelor’s degree of Arts in English and a master’s degree of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Bowling Green State University. She then earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Toledo College of Law. 

She has received numerous accolades and awards, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness - Stark County (NAMI) Starfish Award, the NAACP - Stark County Image Award, Boy Scouts of America Buckeye Council Spirit of Scouting Award, She Elevates Woman of Courage Award, induction into the YWCA Women’s Hall of Fame, and was named an ATHENA International Women’s Leadership Finalist. 

Smith also served as a Canton City Council at Large member after receiving the most votes out of five other candidates. She is the first African American to ever be elected to a city-wide position in Canton, OH. As a city council member, Smith focused on supporting community development block grant funds being allocated to provide mental health programming for youth and enhancing community awareness about mental health services and resources available in the community.   

Whether she is speaking at the lectern, holding forth in court, or conversing in dialogue in community centers across the country, Attorney Corey Minor Smith is a well-versed and highly celebrated speaker, thinker and community activist.
