We begin our series on the ‘I am’ sayings of Jesus found in Johns Gospel, with his declaration of ‘I am the bread of life.’ In helping the crowd who sought him out to understand more clearly who he is and what he came to do as Messiah. Jesus spoke to hungry people who could not see beyond their immediate wants and needs. He had fed this large crowd with only a few loaves and fish and they marvelled at this, and they wanted more, more food, more miracles, but instead Jesus challenges them to think beyond their immediate needs as if saying to them ‘ you cannot think about your souls for thinking of your stomachs.’ Jesus put his command in one sentence, ‘Don't work for the food which perishes but for that which lasts forever and gives eternal life.’ For all who hunger and thirst today face the same challenge - how do we fill the hunger within every heart? Will we be consumed by a desire to satisfy that hunger with things that have no lasting value or effect or respond to the invitation to believe in the one God sent to us as our spiritual bread and who gives us eternal life?
