Ezra 8 gives us a serious dilemma. As Ezra recruits his team to return from Babylon to Jerusalem to help reinstitute the Mosaic Law and lead the spiritual revival in the city, he sends out a plea to the surrounding areas in captivity to recruit from ALL the tribes of Israel. Expectantly, Ezra assumes the LEVITES would show up, for they were the traditional ministers in the Temple and some of the spiritual leaders of God's people. But as the prophet gathers at the river, he discovers that NO LEVITES show up to go. The text highlights the NEED for spiritual leadership to accomplish tasks of spiritual restoration and how it is critical for us to not just discover this leadership (oftentimes answering God's call on our life), but also to hold leaders to accountability.
