Illinois finds another puzzle piece in the transfer portal as Baylor transfer Matthew Mayer commits to Brad Underwood and the Illini. Craig Choate and Logan Lee react to the news in an Illini Special episode from No One Asked Us.
Mayer spent four years at Baylor where he averaged 6.9 points and 3.2 rebounds for his career. He The 6’9 forward started all 33 games for the Bears in 2022 and averaged a career high 9.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. He played double-digit minutes in all but one game for Baylor during their national championship season in 2021, that included a 82-69 win over Illinois where Mayer scored 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
Mayer joins Texas Tech transfer Terrence Shannon as former Big 12 standouts to take their talents north to the Big Ten. Mayer also joins former Baylor teammate Dain Dainja on the Illini roster. Illinois once returns three players that played significant minutes for the Illini last season in Coleman Hawkins, RJ Melendez, and Luke Goode.
The Illini still have two open scholarships for the upcoming season. The roster could use another big man down low and a lead guard. Brad Underwood has also mentioned leaving one of those scholarships open for the potential addition of a mid-year transfer, like Dainja last season.
