Did you know that every 73 seconds, an American is Sexually Assaulted? Sexual violence is a significant public health problem affecting the lives of millions of people in the United States, which can lead to serious short- and long-term health consequences. Sexual assault can take many different forms and can be defined in different ways, but one thing remains the same: it’s never the victim’s fault. Last month was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and we saw a lot of organizations doing great things to increase awareness and promote overall solidarity between allies and survivors. But when it comes to topics like these, it’s not enough to limit the conversation to one month out of the year.
So, to keep the conversation going, we’ll dive into the questions on all of our minds, like, what does being a supportive friend look like? Is the culture around this topic on social media causing more harm than good? And what even is sexual assault in the first place? Here are six burning questions I researched and be sure to listen to the episode for the answers I found: Does sexual assault only happen to women? Is sexual violence connected to other forms of violence? What are the consequences of sexual violence? Are social media movements helping to break down the stigma around sexual assault? Or perpetuating potentially harmful cultures around abuse? What are the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on victims of sexual violence? How can I be the best ally possible?
