What I have learned over the course of my life is this:
When you push beneath the surface—beneath the pain, the losses, the disappointments, the anger—what you avoiddoesn’t disappear. It amplifies. It shows up as exhaustion, numbness, overworking, or the quiet escape into distractions that keep you away from yourtrue authenticity and vulnerability.
Life happens.
Emotions like anger, grievance, and shame are signals most of us were never taught to listen to. They are uncomfortable. They ask something of us. And so we turn away. I know this terrain intimately.
About twenty years ago, I found myself on the edge of burnout. I had poured myself into work as a way of not feeling—of not having to sit with grief, disappointment, and unresolved loss and pain. From the outside I wasfunctioning. Inside, I was emptying out.
What saved me was not another strategy—but a pause.
I felt a deep call to step into a quiet space of reflection, and that call led me to the Camino de Santiago. Walking day after day, with nothing to distract me from my inner life, I discovered something essential:
The way forward is not around the pain, but through it.
Walking through the darkness.
Stepping into the fire.
Staying present when everything is in denial and rebellion, wanting to turn away.
If you find yourself in an in-between moment—startingthis year longing for deeper purpose, real connection, honesty with yourself, and the support of consistency and accountability—I invite you to join me.
