Description

With magnificent views over a wide sweep of Morecambe Bay, the lido at Grange over Sands was a popular spot with swimmers and sun worshippers for decades.

Built in 1932 the art deco structure is the only surviving seaside lido in the north west and one of only 4 in England. In 1993 it closed and fell into disrepair becoming blot on the Bay.

In recent months efforts to reopen it have taken a step forward with work to stop the rot. Earlier this summer South Lakeland District Council agreed to begin work aimed at 'making the derelict Grange Lido site stable, safe and accessible.'

A so-called “light-touch” refurbishment will take place.

On a windy afternoon, on one of the last days before the site is declared out of bounds to visitors to allow work to begin, members of the Save Grange Lido organisation showed me around the structure.
