Description

Last time we looked at the sounding of the fifth Trumpet Judgment. We saw these creatures, these locust-like creatures, that we are almost certain are demonic creatures who have come out of the bottomless pit, or the abyss. As they come forth, they come forth to bring great suffering and pain on the humanity that has rejected the Lord Jesus. We are given a very interesting description starting in Revelation 9:7 that we are going to look at today.

Revelation 9:7 says, “The appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like faces of men.” Look at these descriptions. Obviously, this is not your normal insect or normal anything, really. We see similar creature descriptions in Ezekiel. Also in Isaiah, we see creatures that have very unusual descriptions with similar faces that are seraphim and cherubim. So, we have some understanding of these types of descriptions, but this is so unique. These locusts are just described in unbelievable ways.

We are picking up on a lot of symbolism that we must understand as best we can but not push to far. So, we find they have crowns on their heads like gold. This symbolism indicates that there is some royalty, power, and authority with these creatures. What they rule over I don’t know, but they have some appearance of royalty. Their faces are like faces of men. It is also a possibility that these locustlike creatures from the bottomless pit could take on forms of people and rulers and then begin to rule the earth along with the antichrist.

Revelation 9:8 says, “They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions.” A very interesting description again. Hair of women would be a softness of women. The beauty of a woman’s hair perhaps. On the other hand, they have teeth like a lion. This is depicting the fact that they are destructive. They destroy whatever is in their path.

Revelation 9:9 continues, “They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle.” Looking more closely at these amazing descriptions, we can’t quite put together exactly what these creatures are like. Notice the word like in these descriptions. They are described as like this or like that. He is not saying they ARE exactly these things. Remember that John is describing the indescribable. As he makes his best attempt to describe these creatures, we have a picture that tells us these are incredibly powerful, vicious, mean-spirited beings. We know for sure that they are demonic in nature. They have these breastplates of iron which gives them protection. Their wings sound like chariots. So, we see battle going on when it says many horses rushing to battle. These creatures have come to do damage in the form of battle perhaps . . .
