Welcome to Episode 3: Mental Health & Entrepreneurship!
In this episode, Sal (@sal.yyz) sits down with Harvard dropout and mettleAI CEO, Razi Syed (@https.razi). Razi is quite successful with mettleAI, which is an app that predicts mental health deterioration and early relapses. Yet a few years ago, he found himself addicted to drugs, and standing on a bridge looking at the traffic below.
While going through treatment and hospitalization process, Razi soon realized that nothing changed. He didn't feel better. He thought it was all his fault. After all... physiatrists boast that 50% of people with severe mental illness recover. A literal coin flip. In reality, it wasn't his fault at all. It was the way mental health is treated. Why? Because physiatrists have poor data. They have not changed their clinical approach since the 80's. We still use subjective "self assessment" questionnaires to diagnose our patients.
Fast forward a few years, Razi recovered, and went on to study computer science at Harvard University. Although in a much better headspace, something still didn't feel right. He knew from his experience that there was a need for better treatment for mental health.
Dropping out for the second time now, Razi took a leap of faith and went all into founding mettleAI. His mission is to revolutionize the way we see mental health treatment and prevent others from going through what he had to.
Razi dropped some very inspirational messages for those currently struggling mentally, and gave good insight to those pursing their own startups and chasing their passion.
