Edith Garrud was the first female ju-jitsu instructor in the West. She and her husband started a dojo in London, and then began to offer self defense classes specifically for the suffragettes, as the battle for women's right to vote was becoming increasingly violent. Her classes were so popular that they had to be moved to a larger location for everyone to be able to attend. The ju-jitsu Body Guard unit were nicknamed "Suffrajitsu", and we think that's pretty incredible!
