In this episode I discuss the dynamic relationship between Order and Chaos–the basic building blocks of the universe. I have come to see this dynamic tension underlying EVERYTHING, from psychological well-being, to relationships, to the success of athletes, artists, and companies, to the health and survival of social and political systems. Striking the balance between these two forces–or, we might say, walking the "Middle Way"–guides us to greater psychological, physical, and social well-being. It also might determine whether our society survives.
Expect to learn:
- What "chaos" and "order" mean and how they manifest psychologically.
- The relationship between "masculine" order and "feminine" chaos in society.
- What happens when order and chaos become pathological (i.e., extreme), both individually and collectively.
- How certain mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression, addiction) reflect either too much order, or too much chaos; where you might fall on this spectrum; and why I've turned to this framework for managing my OCD symptoms (i.e., too much order).
- How to set a compass for your day, and life, that includes a healthy mixture of the two.
- Why NBA champs and your favorite athlete, team, performer, author, etc. is fundamentally representing a balance of order and chaos (and thus why we're drawn to them).
- How Improv and Stand-Up Comedy balance these energies and provide a framework for healthy living.
- Why chaos is not "bad," but an opportunity to reorganize into something better and more beautiful.
