He talks about how science is frowned upon in rural areas and how a Black male from Georgia embarked, sustained, and accomplished his journey of becoming an Astrophysicist. John speaks of being told by teachers that he was “good with his hands” which impressed upon him that he wasn’t good enough for anything else. This implied that he did not have the mental focus, cognitive capacity, or scholarly intelligence to be anything else. But it only took one teacher to believe in his potential to discover his passion for the universe and what’s beyond what we see as humans. End result, we have Dr. John Hood, Astrophysicist!
