Loneliness is a feeling that can quickly take hold of your mind and steer your thoughts. No one is immune to loneliness. However, it can be combated with the truth in God's Word. Consider this:
"(5) Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (6) So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me."
Hebrews 13:5-6
What truths is taught within these two verses? First, you are encouraged to behave in a way that does not covet the things of others. There is temptation to look on what other people have and strongly desire them for yourself. You may say, “I wouldn’t be so lonely if I had this thing or that person in my life. I want those things so badly!” Well, that may be true, but is that the right way to look at your situation?
The next instruction from this passage says that you are to find contentedness in the things you already have in your life. I’m positive that, upon careful analysis and observation, you could find things and people in your life that are a blessing. Regardless, you are encouraged with the last part of verse five. God will never leave you, nor will He abandon you.
This truth is really all you will ever need. I know that there will be difficult times in your life. I know you will feel lonely and isolated. I do not wish to discredit those feelings and problems. They are real. They are painful. However, I also know this; God… will… not… leave… you… ever. Seriously, what kind of promise is that? How wonderful is that promise to you? How wonder is that promise to me?
Verses like this are pure gold when properly applied to the believer. Rest assured, this promise is only for those who have believed on the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the full payment of their sin. So, if you have believed, then I humbly ask you… what else do you need? I do not wish to be insensitive. However, you have all you will ever need in God, your Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, your advocate, and in the Holy Spirit, which indwells you from the moment of your salvation until the day of your death.
Verse six tells you the attitude you should possess when verse five is properly applied. Be bold! Live confidently! The Lord is your helper, regardless of your problems, what the world will do to you, or how you may feel! Do you have needs in this life which need to be met? Well, yes, but God will not leave you! You can live boldly in that truth! Hallelujah!
I am not immune to dark feelings of loneliness. They creep in and make a nest in my head from time to time. If I am not careful, I can dwell on my circumstances more than the truth given to me in these verses. Reader, this is only two verses in the Bible. Imagine how much more is available to you in the rest of His Word?
If you ever want to talk about these things; just pray. Cry out to God and let your tears fall. He hears you. He loves you.
And then, stand… wipe your eyes… and know that you have all you need in Jesus.
