It’s been a long time coming. Decades after experts urged recognition of public drunkenness as a health issue rather than a police matter, and in the wake of intense lobbying following the death of Indigenous woman Tanya Day in custody in 2019, a Victorian trial of sobering-up centres is set to begin.
