In the 1980s stonemason Terry Cunliffe was pleased to start work in the public sector for the Huddersfield Corporation Direct Labour Organisation and he also joined the building workers union, UCATT, where upon being elected as a shop steward he sought to improve workers’ pay and conditions combined with ensuring that council tenants received a good repairs service.
