Civil rights attorney Ben Crump now represents the family of Jamal Sutherland, a man who died while in custody at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in January 2021 while experiencing a mental health issue. Attorney Crump, along with the family, now push for criminal charges against the Charleston County Detention Center deputies involved in Sutherland’s death.
