This week on Episode 114 of the #ReadswithRosaPodcast I catch up for a talanoa with Lauren To’omalatai, a screenwriter, mixed-media artist and tama’ita’i Samoa who lives in Utah, USA. As a screenwriter, Lauren’s stories focus mostly on women and womanhood with a special interest in horror, fantasy and science fiction elements, and she’s written and produced Public Service Announcements specifically for the Pacific Island community on social issues. In 2022, she was named 1 of 6 fellows in the very first all Pacific Island Cohort for the Visual Communication’s Armed with a Camera Fellowship. In May this year, Lauren’s debut short film ‘SNACK’ premiered at the 39th Annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. She is also one of the co-founders of Nuanua Collective - A community for LGBTQ+ Pacific Islanders and QTBIPOC folx. Her advocacy for Pacific Island Filmmakers is rooted in collectivity and building community, and this can be seen through her support and collaboration with Utah Pacific Island Film Series and Masima Film Tour.
