The history of football in Palermo stretches back to 1898, and in 1900 Palermo FC were formed as the Anglo Palermitan Athletic and Football Club. They would become the biggest club in Sicily, but in 2019, under severe financial strain, were expelled from Serie B under controversial circumstances.
