In today’s reading of Tyndale’s OYCSB (with featured content written by the CBT team),
- God is holy. The law is God’s terms for His dwelling among the people.
- God calls the nation into covenant with Him by stating the terms of the covenant. They must love God with all their hearts. They must love other covenant members with all their hearts.
- God’s law deprograms Israel from the idol worship of Egypt. When man worships gods of their imagination, sin forms the law which rules them. Sin destroys the life of the individual and the community since everyone suffers the consequences of their own sin and the sins of others. The law trains God’s people to know the distinction between what is holy and what is wicked, what is clean and what is unclean. Responding to God by faith—ordering life according to belief in what God makes known, or obedience—causes the flourishing of God’s image-bearers and the glorious proclamation of God’s name. Disobedience—rejecting what God makes known—causes the destruction of God’s image-bearers. Therefore, God’s covenant with Israel includes a law which trains them to worship Him correctly and to love other covenant members who worship God in community.
