Description

Austin Asche is a living Territory treasure. At the age of 94, Austin is still actively involved in contributing to the Northern Territory through various heritage and charitable causes.

Born in Melbourne in 1925, Austin arrived in Darwin at the age of four. His father, Eric Asche, was a Crown Law Officer.

Austin spent his formative years here before leaving to Melbourne to continue his schooling and university, where he followed his father’s footsteps and became a lawyer.

In the fifty years he was away from Darwin, he never stopped thinking about it and his yearning to return culminated in an opportunity to take up the position of Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in 1986. He was appointed Chief Justice a year later. In 1993 he was appointed Administrator.

With true Territory wit and modesty, Austin shares his story on this special 100th episode of Territory Story.
