Malarndirri McCarthy is a Senator for the Northern Territory.
Born in Katherine, she comes from the Garrwa and Yanyuwa people on her mother’s side; and she has Irish-Australian heritage from her father’s side.
Growing up, Malarndirri learnt to traverse between the two very different worlds of her parents and in the process learnt resilience and courage.
After high school she accepted a position with the Australian Broadcasting Commission and was a newsreader in Darwin for many years. She then entered politics, first in the Territory parliament and then as a Senator representing the Territory in Canberra.
