Description

The life of a migrant is a mixture of hope and sadness. No matter where you come from, there’s always a sense of loss of familiarity and trepidation of the new and unknown.

Deirdre Bartie was born in a small town in South Africa and grew up during the last two decades of apartheid.

It wasn’t until she finished university and went backpacking in Europe that she was exposed to a different view of her beloved country.

Yet for Deirdre, the end of an era of oppression only began a different kind of oppression.

Faced with the challenges of living in the afterbirth of a new nation, Deidre and her family made the decision to migrate to Darwin, Australia.

She shares her Territory story with circumspection and candour.
