Born in Northern New South Wales to German and English parents, Sybil Klose grew up enjoying a rural lifestyle and at an early age became quite a good tennis player. She may have even turned professional but parents weren’t too thrilled at allowing a 14 year old girl travel to the big smoke of Sydney to play tournaments.
After school she decided to apply for a job training to become a nurse in Darwin and so she began a different adventure. By that stage she was 18 and her parents didn’t quite have the same say in what she did. The year was 1962 and Darwin was a very different place.
Sybil has lived in Darwin for almost 60 years; she’s been married, had three children and lived a life of community service. Besides nursing, Sybil was involved with the Red Cross blood bank for many years and encouraged many locals to donate blood. She provides an interesting, nostalgic perspective on old Darwin.
This is Sybil’s Territory Story.
